7 Signs Your Home Needs a Switchboard Inspection

I’ll be honest — most people do not think much about their switchboard until something starts going wrong.

The lights flicker. The power trips. The old fuse box looks a bit questionable. Or maybe you are planning a renovation, solar, a new oven, or an EV charger, and someone tells you, “You might need your switchboard checked first.”

That is usually when the switchboard suddenly becomes important.

At MJE, we inspect a lot of switchboards across Ballarat and surrounding areas, and one thing I can tell you is this: your switchboard is one of the most important safety points in your home. It controls how electricity is distributed through your lights, power points, appliances, heating, cooling, shed, outdoor areas and everything else connected to your electrical system.

The problem is, many older homes around Ballarat still have switchboards that were never designed for the way we use power today. Years ago, homes had much lighter electrical demands. Now we are running split systems, electric ovens, induction cooktops, dryers, home offices, solar inverters, batteries, outdoor power, security systems and EV chargers.

That is a lot for an older switchboard to keep up with.

A proper switchboard inspection helps us check whether your switchboard is safe, whether your circuits are overloaded, whether your safety switches are doing their job, and whether your home might need repairs or electrical panel upgrades, or, as we usually call them here in Australia, switchboard upgrades.

So, how do you know when it is time to get us out to take a look?

Here are seven signs your home may need a switchboard inspection.

1. Your Circuit Breakers Keep Tripping

If your power trips once, it might not be a big deal. Sometimes a faulty appliance causes it. Sometimes you have too many things running on one circuit. That can happen.

But if your circuit breakers keep tripping again and again, that is not something I’d ignore.

A breaker trips for a reason. It is designed to cut power when something is not right. That could be an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture getting into something it should not, or a safety switch picking up a fault.

What I often see is people just flick the switch back on and hope for the best. And look, I understand why. You are busy, dinner is on, the kids are running around, the heater is going, and you just want the power back.

But if the same circuit keeps tripping, there is usually an underlying issue that needs proper testing.

During a switchboard inspection, we can check the board, test the circuits, look for faults and work out whether the issue is coming from the switchboard, the wiring, an appliance or the load on that circuit.

If your power keeps cutting out when you use the kettle, dryer, heater, oven or microwave, it is worth getting a licensed switchboard electrician to have a look before it becomes a bigger problem.

2. Your Home Still Has Ceramic Fuses

If you open your switchboard and see old ceramic fuses, that is one of the clearest signs your home should be inspected.

Ceramic fuses were common in older homes, and there are still plenty of them around Ballarat. They did the job back in the day, but they were designed for a very different time.

Back then, homes were not running the same number of appliances we use now. There were no EV chargers, no solar inverters, no big home office setups, no battery systems, and usually far fewer high-powered appliances.

The issue with ceramic fuses is not just that they are old. It is that many of these older switchboards do not have the level of safety protection we expect in a modern home. Some may not have safety switches on all the right circuits. Some have been altered over the years. Some are messy, poorly labelled, or just not suitable for today’s electrical loads.

I am not saying every old fuse box is about to fail, but I am saying it should be checked.

When we inspect an older switchboard, we look at the condition of the board, the wiring, the fuses, the protection in place and whether it is suitable for how the home is being used today.

In some cases, the safest option is a switchboard upgrade. You might also hear this called electrical panel upgrades, especially online, but here in Ballarat most people know it as upgrading the switchboard.

If you still have ceramic fuses, especially in an older Ballarat home, I would recommend booking a switchboard inspection.

3. Your Lights Flicker or Dim When Appliances Turn On

A quick flicker every now and then might not worry you too much. But if your lights regularly dim when the heater turns on, or flicker when you use the microwave, kettle, oven or air conditioner, that is worth paying attention to.

This can be a sign that your electrical system is under strain.

Sometimes it is caused by a large appliance drawing a lot of power. Other times it can point to loose connections, overloaded circuits, old wiring or a switchboard that is no longer keeping up with the home’s needs.

We see this quite a bit during Ballarat winters. Once the cold weather hits, people start using heaters, dryers, electric blankets, heated towel rails and other appliances more often. That extra load can expose problems that may not have been obvious during warmer months.

If your lights are flickering regularly, I would not just put up with it. It is one of those small warning signs that can point to something bigger.

As an electrician in Ballarat VIC, we can inspect the switchboard, test the circuits and work out whether the issue is with the board, the wiring, a specific appliance or the load on the circuit.

The good thing about getting it checked early is that you are not waiting for a complete power failure or a more serious fault.

4. You Notice Burning Smells, Buzzing or Heat Near the Switchboard

This is the one I really do not want people ignoring.

Your switchboard should not smell burnt. It should not be hot to touch. It should not be buzzing loudly, crackling, smoking, or showing scorch marks.

If you notice any of those signs, please do not open the switchboard and start poking around. Electrical work is not a DIY job. There is a real risk there, and it needs to be handled by a licensed electrician.

A burning smell, heat or buzzing sound can point to things like loose connections, overheating parts, damaged wiring, faulty breakers, overloaded circuits or arcing inside the switchboard.

That is not something to “keep an eye on” for a few weeks. It needs to be checked.

If there is smoke, fire, or you feel there is immediate danger, treat it as an emergency. Otherwise, call a licensed electrician and get the switchboard inspected properly.

When we carry out a switchboard inspection, we look for signs of heat damage, loose parts, overloaded circuits, old components, poor connections and anything else that could become unsafe.

Your switchboard is supposed to protect your home. If it is making odd noises, getting hot or smelling burnt, something is not right.

5. You Do Not Have Safety Switches on Key Circuits

A lot of homeowners confuse circuit breakers and safety switches. I get it; they are both in the switchboard, they both switch off power, and they can look similar.

But they do different jobs.

A circuit breaker is mainly there to protect the wiring and circuit from overloads and short circuits.

A safety switch, also known as an RCD, is designed to help protect people from electric shock by cutting power quickly when it detects electricity leaking where it should not.

Both are important, but they are not the same thing.

In older switchboards, we often find limited safety switch protection. Sometimes only one or two circuits are protected. Sometimes there are no proper safety switches at all. Sometimes the homeowner is not sure what is protected and what is not.

That is exactly why a switchboard inspection is useful.

We can check what protection is installed, test whether safety switches are working and let you know whether your home has the right level of protection across the right circuits.

This is especially important if you have children, older family members, outdoor power points, a shed, a workshop, a pool, a spa or older wiring in the home.

From my point of view, safety switches are one of the most important parts of a modern switchboard. If your home does not have proper safety switch protection, or you are not sure, it is worth getting a licensed switchboard electrician to check it.

6. You Are Planning Renovations, Solar, Batteries or an EV Charger

One of the best times to book a switchboard inspection is before you start making major changes to your home.

If you are renovating, adding new appliances, installing solar, getting a battery or planning an EV charger, your switchboard needs to be part of the conversation.

A lot of people think about the new oven, the new cooktop, the solar panels or the charger itself, but they forget about the switchboard that has to support it all.

Your switchboard might have been fine for the way your home worked 20 years ago. That does not automatically mean it is ready for the way you want to use power now.

I would recommend a switchboard inspection before:

  • A kitchen renovation
  • Installing a new oven or induction cooktop
  • Adding split system heating or cooling
  • Installing solar panels
  • Adding battery storage
  • Installing an EV charger
  • Building a shed, studio or workshop
  • Adding outdoor lighting or outdoor power
  • Adding extra power points
  • Setting up a serious home office

Solar and EV chargers are big ones. These systems often require the switchboard to be checked before installation. In some cases, the board may need upgrading so the system is safe, compliant and suitable for the extra load.

This is where electrical panel upgrades may be needed. In plain English, that means improving or replacing the old switchboard so it can safely handle modern electrical demands.

Getting the inspection done first helps avoid surprises. We can tell you what your switchboard can handle, what needs upgrading and what the safest plan is before other work begins.

7. Your Switchboard Has Not Been Checked in Years

Sometimes there are no obvious warning signs.

The lights are working. The power is staying on. Nothing smells burnt. Nothing is buzzing. So you assume everything is fine.

And it might be.

But electrical components age over time. Connections can loosen. Moisture can get in. Pests can cause damage. Previous DIY work or old renovations can leave behind issues you may not know about.

We see a lot of switchboards where the homeowner had no idea there was a problem until we opened it up and inspected it properly.

If you have lived in your home for years and cannot remember the last time your switchboard was checked, it is probably time.

This is especially true if your home is older, you have recently bought the property, you are preparing to sell, you are planning renovations, or you are adding larger appliances.

For rental properties, electrical safety checks are especially important, and landlords need to be aware of their responsibilities. But even for owner-occupied homes, regular checks are simply good preventative maintenance.

A switchboard inspection gives you peace of mind. It helps you catch issues early, before they turn into bigger and more expensive problems.

What We Check During a Switchboard Inspection

If you have never had a switchboard inspection before, you might be wondering what actually happens.

When we inspect a switchboard, we are looking at the overall safety, condition and suitability of the board.

We may check things like:

  • The condition of the switchboard
  • Circuit breakers
  • Safety switches
  • Old ceramic fuses
  • Signs of heat damage
  • Burning, melting or discolouration
  • Loose or damaged components
  • Circuit labelling
  • Earthing
  • Moisture or corrosion
  • Pest damage
  • Whether circuits appear overloaded
  • Whether the board has room for future upgrades

We also look at whether the switchboard is suitable for how the home is being used now, not just how it was used years ago.

After the inspection, we explain what we have found in plain English. I think that part is important. You should not be left confused or wondering what you are paying for.

If everything looks good, we will tell you. If something needs attention, we will explain why. And if we think a switchboard upgrade is the safest option, we will walk you through it properly.

Not every inspection leads to a full upgrade. Sometimes a repair is enough. Sometimes a safety switch needs attention. Sometimes the board is safe but could be improved. Other times, especially with older fuse boxes, an upgrade is the right call.

Do You Need a Switchboard Inspection or a Full Switchboard Upgrade?

A switchboard inspection is the first step.

It tells us what condition your switchboard is in and whether anything needs to be fixed, improved or upgraded.

A switchboard upgrade is only needed when the existing board is outdated, unsafe, overloaded or no longer suitable for the home.

You may need an upgrade if:

  • You still have ceramic fuses
  • You do not have proper safety switches
  • Your power keeps tripping
  • There is heat damage or burning
  • The board is too small for extra circuits
  • You are installing solar, batteries or an EV charger
  • Your home’s power needs have outgrown the old board

I always think of it like this: the inspection is the check-up. The upgrade is only the next step if the check-up shows it is needed.

A good electrician should not just push a switchboard upgrade for the sake of it. They should inspect properly, show you what they have found and explain your options clearly.

That is how we like to do things at MJE.

Why Use a Local Switchboard Electrician in Ballarat?

Ballarat has a real mix of homes. We have older weatherboard homes, renovated period homes, newer builds, investment properties, rural properties, sheds, workshops and everything in between.

That means switchboards can vary a lot from property to property.

Some are modern and neat. Some are old but still serviceable. Some have had bits added over the years. Some are well overdue for an upgrade.

As a local electrician in Ballarat VIC, we understand the types of homes around here and the electrical issues that often come with them.

We also understand the way Ballarat households use power, especially in winter when heating and appliance use increases. That local knowledge helps us give practical advice that suits your home, not just generic advice.

If you call us for a switchboard inspection, we are not there to confuse you with technical talk. We are there to check the board, explain what is going on and help you make the safest decision for your home.

Final Thoughts

Your switchboard might not be the most exciting part of your home, but it is one of the most important.

When it is working properly, you probably do not think about it. But when it is outdated, overloaded or damaged, it can create real safety risks.

To recap, your home may need a switchboard inspection if:

  • Your circuit breakers keep tripping
  • You still have ceramic fuses
  • Your lights flicker or dim
  • You notice burning smells, buzzing or heat
  • You do not have proper safety switch protection
  • You are planning renovations, solar, batteries or an EV charger
  • Your switchboard has not been checked in years

The main thing I want you to take away is this: do not ignore the warning signs.

Electrical problems rarely fix themselves. And with switchboards, it is always better to find a problem early than wait until it becomes urgent.
